How I got into HAM radio
CB Radio: A Dead End
In January 2021, I was planning a summer road trip on my Harley-Davidson touring bike. I'd seen online that it could be equipped with a CB module, which sounded like fun for the trip. But after some research, I learned CB radio wasn't very active in Sweden. It felt like a dead end, so I put the idea on hold.
69 MHz and SDR: A New Beginning
Just when I thought my radio days were over before they even started, I learned about a license-free band on 69 MHz with some local traffic. I ditched the idea of a motorcycle setup and in early February, I got a Wouxun KG-UV8G handheld transceiver (HT) for this band.
It didn't take long to realize the HT wasn't enough. Soon I added an Anytone AT-588 as a base station with a Sirio CX-4 antenna. At the same time, I discovered SDRs and got an Airspy HF+ Discovery with a Sirio SD-1300 discone antenna. This was a game-changer! On 69 MHz, I started hearing more activity. Plus, the SDR opened up transmissions from all over, including HAM radio operators.
PTT and Call Signs: Challenges and Solutions
Despite this, I still struggled with actually pushing the PTT and talking, something I've always found difficult and still do.
While researching about call signs on the 69 MHz band, I stumbled upon SK0MG, an organization active on both the HAM and 69 MHz bands. As a member, I'd be assigned my own call sign from their Pristo range (mine is Pristo-1977).
In March 2021, SK0MG announced an upcoming HAM certification course with an opportunity to take the exam at the end. I didn't hesitate and signed up right away!
The HAM Certification Course: A New Call Sign
After getting my Pristo call sign, I started making contacts on 69 MHz, but mostly listened and explored HF stations. Picking up BBC from Ascension Island for the first time blew my mind—amazing to hear so clearly from that distance!
In August 2021, my HAM certification course started. As it progressed, I realized there was a LOT to learn. With my history of test anxiety, things weren't looking great. But in late September, it was exam time, and I passed with flying colors!
Since September 23, 2021, I'm officially SA0POW.
